We utilize the most current, cutting-edge technologies to evaluate individual risk factors and develop personalized treatment plans, based on personal and family health history.

Breast Cancer Lifetime Risk Tool

Our high-risk screening program has implemented a breast cancer lifetime risk tool called the Tyrer-Cuzick (TC) Risk Assessment Calculator.

Considered one of the most reliable breast cancer risk assessment tools available, TC asks questions related to various familial factors, reproductive history and overall medical history to determine a patient’s likelihood of developing breast cancer.

Other key risk factors include a patient’s childbearing history, menopausal status, the number of previous breast biopsies and past radiation therapy to the chest. The results of the TC Risk Assessment Calculator will display two scores: 10-year risk and lifetime risk. A lifetime risk score greater than or equal to 20 percent is considered high-risk for breast cancer.

How Does Testing Work?

Every patient who comes in for a mammogram or DEXA bone density scan is strongly encouraged to complete a questionnaire on their personal and family medical history through the Ambry Genetics CARE Program. Female patients are also assessed for breast cancer risk using the Tyrer-Cuzick model. We utilize TC scores to make recommendations for intermediate and high-risk patients to determine additional diagnostic testing and other prevention strategies.

In the event a patient meets the criteria for genetic testing and they test negative, we counsel the patient on their TC score and refer them to our high-risk screening program if needed. For patients who do not undergo genetic testing but are determined to be at elevated risk for breast cancer using the TC score, a recommendation is made on the patient’s mammogram report. The patient can then review their CARE summary with all the national guidelines, based on their risk level.

Benefits of the TC Score

In Connecticut and on the national level, we’re setting the bar high for the standard of care we provide. TC scores can have a huge impact on patient lives! The results give our team a better understanding of each patient’s overall risk for breast cancer, allowing us in coordination with your doctor, the ability to manage your care pathway more efficiently and identify the need for additional screenings.
