To help provide the most accurate and consistent results from your DXA body composition scan, please follow the preparation instructions below.
- Do not have a DXA scan if you are pregnant or think you may be pregnant.
- If you have recently undergone an imaging procedure involving a contrast agent, including a barium enema, contrast MRI, CT scan or other contrast study, please wait at least 7 days before your DXA scan.
- Do not take vitamins, supplements or antacids containing calcium for 24 hours prior to your scan.
- Wear light, comfortable clothing without zippers or metal.
For the Best, Most Consistent Results
- Avoid strenuous exercise for 12–24 hours before your scan.
- Avoid alcohol and caffeine for 12–24 hours before your scan.
- Maintain your normal hydration. Do not intentionally overhydrate or dehydrate.
- Fast for 2–4 hours before your scan.
- For follow-up scans, try to schedule your appointment at approximately the same time of day as your previous scan.
